Lesson 1 Introduction
Lesson 1 Introduction
This lesson does the following:
- Offers an overview of the general outcomes of the course. Participants may have already read this on the course information page prior to enrollment.
- Explains how this course fits within the broader portfolio of courses at Coram Deo at this point in time.
- Informs participants how the online version of the course is structured (where you are now).
- Shares important administrative requirements.
Overview
- Gain knowledge to better mentor, counsel, parent adolescents;
- Understanding how the brain of the adolescent works and what that means for those of significance in their lives;
- Develop sensitivity towards the spiritual development of adolescents and how that influences identity formation and belonging;
- Being able to spot and counter the effects of social media and unhealthy discourses in the life of the adolescent;
- More specific content outcomes may be presented in each lesson.
Portfolio of courses
This course is part of the CPD series of courses at Coram Deo. The CPD series consists of ten short courses presented over three years. Coram Deo students who enroll for the year cover at least four courses of the larger portfolio.
This course is similar but not the same as the adolescent module as part of the two year pastoral narrative therapy programme. This means that former students of the pastoral narrative therapy programme get to influence the topics to a certain extent based on prior exposure.
Students enrolled in this course either enrolled for the CPD series, the combined practitioner supervision programme (that includes one year of the CPD series), or enrolled for it as a once off learning event.
Online structure
Any online structure of a live course or module consists of an introductory lesson and a closing lesson. In-between these, learners will find the various recorded lectures where each lecture is offered as a lesson. Typically then if the introductory lesson is lesson 1, lesson 2 will contain the first lecture and lesson 3 the second lecture and so forth. Where this differs in a given course the specific lesson will contain more detail of the structure.
Introductory lessons may typically offer overviews and outcomes, administrative arrangements, clarification, the place of the course or module in the larger Coram Deo learning portfolio, lecturer information and potentially lecturer briefs about what is important.
Closing lessons share final thoughts, last administrative arrangements that include the attendance register instruction, notes on certification, evaluation or reflection space where applicable.
Administration
Pre-scribed material
Prescribed material, where applicable such as for longer programmes only, can be located in the individual lessons where recordings are embedded (or at times offered in the introductory lesson).
Note that short courses often to not have prescribed material as the lectures itself contain what is needed.
Certification
In order to receive the Coram Deo certificate learners must provide a short reflection (explained in the closing lesson) before they can proceed to download their electronic Coram Deo certificate. For those interested in the university certificate a written reflection is a requirement (explained in the closing lesson).
Learners must mark each of the lessons as complete even if they have attended the course live.
Technical challenges
If at any point learners experience technical issues they can email tech7@coramdeo.co.za
We are aware of certain persistent but ad hoc technical issues. These mostly have to do with how learners use their technology/browsers and we have some pointers for the technical issues that present itself on occasion.
